OSL Cutting Technologies expands operations team with new trainees

Sheffield manufacturer creates new roles for former Kickstart staff

Yorkshire-based OSL Cutting Technologies, which forms part of the OSL Group, has expanded its manufacturing team with the appointment of two new trainee operators.

The move has seen one trainee, Jamie Slater, take on a permanent full time role within the business, having initially joined in a part-time capacity as part of the Government Kickstart Scheme to carry out general duties including laser marking and steel cutting.

Employing more than 100 people from its base in Sheffield and a global leader in the design and manufacture of cutting tools, this announcement forms part of OSL Cutting Technologies ongoing commitment to creating new manufacturing job opportunities within the South Yorkshire region.

Jamie will now receive training under the supervision of the OSL team, this includes equipment safety training and general Health & Safety. They will work across the company’s brands including Rotabroach, GJ Halls, Taylor & Jones, and Universal Drilling.

OSL Cutting Technologies parent company, OSL Group, said it is also engaging with the kickstart scheme across its businesses to provide industry insight to young adults

Launched last year, the programme aims to create job opportunities for 16- to 24-year-olds who may be at risk of long-term unemployment.

Commenting on the opportunity, Jamie Slater said: “This has proved to be such a fantastic opportunity to get hands on experience of working within the manufacturing industry, and I am extremely grateful to both the Kickstart Scheme and the team at OSL Cuttings Technology.

“Earlier this year I took on the challenge to gain some work experience, so to now be in full time work and working towards a career is really exciting.”

Bradley Kirk, the line manager at the firm said: “Jamie grabbed the opportunity to gain some work experience with both hands when they first joined us in April, and have made a real contribution to the business ever since.

“We are now delighted to be welcoming them to the team as permanent, full time members of staff, and we are looking forward to seeing their confidence and capabilities continue to grow.”

Matthew Grey, OSL Group Managing Director added: “As a business with such a strong Sheffield heritage it is important to us to continue to create opportunities for younger people to learn the necessary skills to deliver the quality products that are associated with our region, and the government kickstart scheme has helped with that commitment.

“Having had such a good experience with Jamie, we are looking forward to welcoming more candidates over the coming months here at OSL Cutting Technologies, and across the wider OSL Group.”

The growth of the business follows news earlier this year that it had been awarded the prestigious 2021 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category.

A family-owned company with a manufacturing heritage dating back to 1864, OSL Cutting Technologies has developed into one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of High-Speed Steel cutting tools.
